Shopify's built-in deposits vs Balance Due

Shopify Plus includes deposits, but only for B2B company customers through payment terms. For deposits from ordinary customers on your online store, on any plan, you need an app.

In short: Shopify's built-in deposits are a Shopify Plus feature for B2B company customers: you set one deposit percentage per company location, and the balance is due on that customer's payment terms but is not charged automatically. For deposits on your online store for ordinary customers, on any plan, you need an app such as Balance Due.

What Shopify includes

Since June 2024, Shopify Plus stores selling B2B can require a percentage deposit at checkout for a company location, and every order from that location pays it. The same deposit requirement can be added to B2B draft orders, where it is a percentage of the subtotal, excluding tax and shipping. The remaining balance is due on the payment terms assigned to the location. According to Shopify's help centre, the balance is not captured automatically when the terms expire: the customer pays from their account, or you charge the saved card by hand.

Shopify opened B2B to the Basic, Grow and Advanced plans in April 2026, but deposits stayed Plus-only. On any plan, what apps use is a different mechanism, deferred purchase options, which is why Balance Due works for storefront orders without Plus.

What an app adds on any plan

  • Deposits for ordinary storefront customers, not just B2B company accounts.
  • A deposit plan editor: percentage or fixed, by product, collection or tag, with your storefront wording.
  • The collection process: scheduled charge from the saved card, retries with pay links, overdue flag, merchant alerts.
  • Reminders and receipts by email and text, and the customer payment page.
  • An automatic fulfilment hold released when the order is paid.
  • Instalments on Shopify Plus, order edits and refunds reconciled against the order.

When the built-in feature is enough

  • You are on Plus, sell wholesale to B2B company customers, and one deposit percentage per buyer works for you.
  • You are happy to collect balances yourself when payment terms come due.

When Balance Due is the better fit

  • You take deposits from ordinary customers on your online store.
  • You are on Basic, Grow or Advanced.
  • You want the balance charged automatically, with retries, reminders and a fulfilment hold.
  • You want different deposits by product, a balance when the order is ready, or instalments on Plus.

Shopify built-in deposit questions

Does Shopify have built-in deposits?

Yes, but only for B2B. On Shopify Plus you can require a percentage deposit from B2B company customers through payment terms, at checkout or on a draft order. There is no built-in deposit option for ordinary customers on the online store, on any plan; that needs an app.

Does Shopify charge the balance automatically?

No. Shopify's help centre says payments are not captured automatically when B2B payment terms expire. The customer can pay from their account, or you charge their saved card by hand in the Shopify admin.

Will Shopify bring deposits to every plan?

Possibly. Shopify opened B2B to the Basic, Grow and Advanced plans in April 2026, but deposits stayed Plus-only. Even if that changes, the feature covers B2B company customers, not storefront orders.

Can Balance Due run alongside Shopify's built-in deposits on Plus?

Yes, because they cover different customers: Shopify's deposits apply to B2B company orders through payment terms, and Balance Due to storefront orders through purchase options. If B2B buyers can see products that carry a Balance Due plan, test a B2B checkout before going live.
