About Balance Due

One developer, one problem, one app. Here is who is behind it and what that means for you.

Why this app exists

Shopify has been able to take a deposit at checkout for years. What it has never done is the part that follows: charging the rest on the right day, retrying the card when it fails, chasing the customer when it keeps failing, and stopping the warehouse shipping an order that is not paid for. Most stores do that by hand on a spreadsheet until it becomes somebody's part-time job.

Balance Due is that follow-up process, automated. It does not touch your checkout, it does not process payments, and it does not lend anyone money. Shopify takes the deposit, Shopify holds the card, and Balance Due asks Shopify to collect the balance when you said it should.

Who builds it

Balance Due is written and supported by Mathew O'Neill, a developer in Cheshire. There is no support team, no outsourced inbox and no ticket queue: the person who replies to your email is the person who wrote the code, which is either reassuring or alarming depending on your experience of software companies.

In practice it means bugs get fixed the same week rather than entering a backlog, and feature requests get an honest yes or no instead of a roadmap page.

The company

Balance Due is a product of DadLink Technologies Limited, company number 16161444, registered in England and Wales, with a registered office in Handforth, Cheshire. The same company builds a small portfolio of business software, some of it for Shopify and some of it not.

  • DadLink Technologies is the parent company.
  • Terms Due does credit control for Shopify B2B net terms: credit limits, checkout holds and collections on unpaid invoices.
  • Booking Slot handles appointments, classes and staff bookings on Shopify.
  • Team Connect is an AI voice and SMS platform for UK businesses, and is what sends the text messages Balance Due uses.
  • StitchFast converts artwork into machine embroidery files.

What Balance Due will not do

It is not a buy now, pay later service and never will be. There is no lender, no credit check and no interest: your customer owes you the balance, not a finance company. It does not process payments or act as a payment gateway, and it does not split a schedule into multiple instalments, because Shopify treats multi-payment schedules as something only payment apps may offer.

It also does not take deposits on POS or draft orders, because Shopify's deferred purchase options are an online checkout feature. If you need any of those, the comparison pages say honestly which app does.

Support and data

Support is by email at support@balance-due.com, with a reply within one working day and faster if orders are stuck. Data is stored on Google Cloud in London, is never sold or used for advertising, and is deleted when Shopify sends its removal request after you uninstall. The privacy policy says exactly what is held and why.

Try it on one order

The Free plan covers three open payment plans, which is enough to run a real deposit order end to end before you pay anything.
