Features
Each feature on one page: what it does, how it is set up, and where the edges are. Together they cover one deposit order from the product page to paid in full.
How the features fit together
Deposits is the only one you set up. The other four run on their own once an order comes in.
- 1
Deposits
Deposit taken
A plan turns into a Shopify purchase option on the products you choose. The customer picks it, pays the deposit at checkout, and Shopify saves the card and records the balance on the order.
- 2
Hold fulfilment until paid
Nothing charged
The moment the order lands, a Shopify fulfilment hold goes on it. Your warehouse, 3PL or shipping app cannot ship it until the balance clears.
- 3
Reminders and receipts
Nothing charged
The customer gets the schedule straight away and a reminder three days before the balance. You get a digest every morning.
- 4
Automatic balance collection
Balance charged
On the due date the saved card is charged. If it fails, a payment link goes out and the charge retries after 1, 3 and 7 days, then the order is flagged overdue.
- 5
Customer payment page
Pay now, any time
Every message links to one page where the customer can see what is paid, what is left, and settle early if they want to.
What none of them touch
Balance Due does not process payments, hold card details or change your checkout. Shopify takes the deposit through your own payment provider, Shopify stores the card as a payment mandate on the order, and Shopify's outstanding amount on the order is the number every feature works from. The app asks Shopify to charge, hold and release; it never invents a balance of its own.
That is also why it works on every Shopify plan. Deferred purchase options, payment mandates and fulfilment holds are available to apps on Basic, Shopify and Advanced as well as Plus.
Every feature on this page is included on the Free plan, which covers three orders with an open balance at any one time. The paid plans raise that limit and add texts, alerts and the retry ladder.
Questions
Do I need to set up each feature separately?
No. You create a deposit plan and attach it to products. The hold, the reminders, the collection and the customer page all follow from that one plan. The settings page lets you change the reminder lead time, the retry ladder and the message channels if you want to.
Which features are on the Free plan?
All of them. Free is limited to three orders with an open balance at any one time and carries a small branding line on customer emails. Starter removes the branding and adds the retry ladder, alerts and the daily digest. Growth and Pro add text messages.
Does any of this need Shopify Plus?
No. Every feature uses APIs that Shopify makes available to apps on every plan.
Can I turn a feature off?
The fulfilment hold can be turned off per plan, and the email and text channels can each be switched off in settings. Automatic collection and the customer page are always on, because without them a deposit is just an unpaid invoice.
